Dr. Susan Strasser - “A White Historian Explores ‘Race Riots’”

  • Bethesda Presbyterian Church 7611 Clarendon Road Bethesda, MD, 20814 (map)

Sponsored by BPC & Interwoven Congregations for Racial Justice and Healing

Violent clashes between different races have disturbed the social order in the U.S. since long before the Civil War – and the phrase “race riot” has been used to describe such disparate events as the Tulsa massacre of 1921, the 1968 uprisings following the assassination of Dr. King, and the anti-Chinese riots of the 1870s.

Dr. Susan Strasser investigates the term and a history of racially charged violence that has framed American discussions of race throughout the nation’s history.

Susan Strasser is an award-winning historian and a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians. She is Richards Professor Emerita of American History at the University of Delaware.
