"Blessed are ..." Thus begins the three-chapter series of Jesus' teachings the church institutional (through its lectionary system) avoids like the plague. A series of teachings better known as the Sermon on the Mount.

And yet "Blessed are ..." may sound as passive as the subjects who Jesus then states are blessed: the meek, the mournful. Not so, his intended meaning.

"Bold Blessings" (Matthew 5:1-16) is Sunday's Message.
