AUGUST 5 -- WORSHIP 10 AM: "WHAT POLITICIANS FAIL TO TELL US ABOUT ROMANS 13"

  • Bethesda Presbyterian Church 7611 Clarendon Road Bethesda, MD, 20814 United States (map)

Here's Sunday's Bulletin. Note on page 5 details of our ongoing 11:15 am post-Worship discussion of Debby Irving's Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race.

Recently, our U.S. Attorney General joined a 20-century parade of politicians who have unfurled Romans 13:1 as religious cover for decisions of state. Defending the policies separating immigrant families at the border, Mr. Sessions intoned, “I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the purpose of order."

What did Paul mean with these words? And what can Romans Chapter 13 -- taken as a whole -- say to us today? Join Us for Worship as we grapple with this tough text: taking it seriously, and not literally!
